Tham Ma Slope – The Story Behind Its Name 🌋🐎
A Challenge for the Strongest Horses 🐎⚡
Before the Happy Road (National Highway 4C) existed, the primary mode of transportation for the local people was packhorses. 🌲 These horses not only carried goods but also played an essential role in the daily lives of ethnic minorities. 🏡
Tham Ma Slope served as a test of endurance for these horses on their journey from lowlands to the Dong Van plateau. 🛏️ Horses that could ascend this long, steep, winding slope while remaining strong were kept for transporting goods. 🚚🏠 Meanwhile, those that failed were usually eliminated and often used as ingredients for thang co, a traditional dish of the Hmong people. 🍲
This process of “evaluating” the horses’ strength gave rise to the name Tham Ma Slope:
- “Tham” means to assess, evaluate. 🌎
- “Ma” means horse (in Sino-Vietnamese). 🐎
