I am Joris, a rapper from France. My journey started from China, crossing the border into Vietnam. I spent two days in Hanoi, enjoying a bowl of delicious pho 🍜, wandering around the Old Quarter 🏮, and soaking up the vibrant energy of the capital. But Hà Giang, the northeastern frontier of Vietnam, was the real destination I longed to explore.
I arrived at Time Travel, a cozy homestay in the heart of Hà Giang. It wasn’t the most modern place, but it had a rustic charm and warmth—just like the people here. The host, Tuấn, also known as Time, was a friendly local with great English skills. Along with his friend Đông (Winter), he shared fascinating stories about Hà Giang—winding roads 🛤️, villages nestled against the mountains 🏡, breathtaking mountain passes 🏔️, and the rich culture of the ethnic minorities.
Their stories inspired me to choose a bicycle as my way of exploring Hà Giang. I wanted to feel the rhythm of this land with every pedal stroke rather than watching it pass through a car or motorbike window. 🚲
🌟 Cycling Adventure – Conquering the Passes, Unfolding Stories 📖
I set off at sunrise with a sturdy mountain bike, a light backpack 🎒, and an eager spirit.
🔹 Day 1 – Quản Bạ and Heaven’s Gate
The ride from Hà Giang city to Quản Bạ was an intense challenge. Steep slopes pushed my legs to the limit. But once I reached Heaven’s Gate, I knew every effort was worth it. Below me, the lush Tam Sơn Valley stretched out, peaceful and green. The Twin Fairy Mountains, with their soft, rolling curves, looked like nature’s own masterpiece. ⛰️
🔹 Day 2 – Đốc Cán Tỷ & Yên Minh
Pedaling through winding roads, I stopped at Đốc Cán Tỷ, a place where flowers bloom among the rocks 🌿, pine forests whisper in the wind 🌲, and H’Mông houses peek through the mist. By nightfall, I reached Yên Minh, a serene town offering a perfect retreat after a long day’s ride.
🔹 Day 3 – Thẩm Mã Pass, Lũng Cú Flagpole & Đồng Văn
Climbing Thẩm Mã Pass, I learned about its history—once a place where horses were tested for strength 🐎. If they could make it to the top, they were deemed worthy. I, too, wanted to test myself against Hà Giang’s rugged terrain.
At Lũng Cú Flagpole, the northernmost point of Vietnam, the red flag with a golden star 🇻🇳 waved proudly in the wind. Standing there, I felt the power of this land, rich in history and resilience.
At night, Đồng Văn Old Quarter came alive. Though small, it was vibrant with glowing lanterns 🏮, the scent of sizzling street food 🍢, and the warmth of local hospitality. I sipped corn wine 🍶, listened to stories from the locals, and felt a deep connection to this land.
🔹 Day 4 – Mã Pí Lèng Pass, Nho Quế River & Mèo Vạc
Day four was the most exhilarating—Mã Pí Lèng Pass, one of Vietnam’s most challenging yet stunning mountain passes. Slowly, I pedaled through its hairpin curves, feeling the sharp wind whip across my face. Every meter conquered filled me with pure adrenaline.
Then, the view hit me. The Nho Quế River, flowing like a jade ribbon 💎 beneath towering cliffs, left me speechless. In that moment, I felt Hà Giang’s soul—wild, majestic, and overwhelmingly beautiful.
🔹 Day 5 – Mèo Vạc to Du Già
From Mèo Vạc, I cycled to Du Già, a tranquil valley where endless rice fields swayed in the breeze 🌾. That night, under the flickering campfire 🔥, I shared drinks with new friends, immersing myself in the melodies of ethnic music 🎶.
🔹 Day 6 – Du Già to Hà Giang
On the final day, I rode back to Hà Giang, completing nearly 350 kilometers on two wheels. My legs were exhausted, but my heart was full of unforgettable memories. ❤️
