Long ago, when Hà Giang was still a wild and untouched land, it was home to various ethnic tribes, including the H’Mông, Dao, and Tày people. Towering mountains, winding rivers, and treacherous cliffs created a landscape both breathtaking and perilous.
🌟 The Prophecy of the Shaman 🔮
It is said that during a sacred mountain ritual, an old shaman had a mysterious vision. He gazed upon the highest peak, where thick mist veiled the summit, and uttered a prophecy:
💬 “Whoever can ride a horse across that treacherous mountain without turning back shall open a new path for the people, leading them to prosperity.”
The prophecy spread throughout the villages. Yet, everyone knew that the mountain was too dangerous, so much so that even the strongest horses dared not tread its paths.
🔥 The Young Warrior and His Dream of a Legendary Road
In a small village at the foot of the mountain, there lived a young man named Giàng A Lềnh. From childhood, he was known for his courage and exceptional horse-riding skills. His father had once been a great warrior who defended the village from bandits but had disappeared in battle on those very peaks.
One night, Giàng A Lềnh dreamed of his father standing in the mist on the highest mountain peak. His father spoke to him:
💬 “This road is not only your challenge but the destiny of our people. If you can cross it, you will not only find me but also open the way for generations to come.”
Upon waking, Giàng A Lềnh resolved to fulfill the prophecy.
🐎 The Journey Across the Abyss
He chose the strongest horse—a majestic black stallion with eyes that shone like stars, said to possess a spirit of its own.
At dawn, he rode toward the mountain, where thick fog blanketed the treacherous slopes. The path ahead was nothing but sheer cliffs, near-vertical ascents, and bottomless ravines.
The howling wind echoed like the roar of the mountain gods. The mighty steed climbed the jagged rocks, maneuvering through sharp turns and steep inclines.
📍 Halfway up the pass, a violent storm suddenly erupted. Thunder cracked across the sky, rain pounded against the slick rock faces, and the ground trembled beneath them. The stallion hesitated, its ears twitching as if sensing an unseen danger.
💨 But Giàng A Lềnh did not waver. He tightened his grip on the reins, pressed himself against the horse, and urged it forward.
⛰️ The Defining Moment at the Summit
As they neared the mountain’s peak, a blinding bolt of lightning struck a massive rock along the path.
💥 BOOM!
The boulder shattered, rolling down to carve out a narrow path along the cliffside.
The stallion suddenly reared up, standing on its hind legs and releasing a triumphant cry. Giàng A Lềnh showed no fear—he only looked forward, where a new road had been born.
💫 In that moment, he felt an inexplicable surge of energy. The wind ceased, the sky cleared, and the golden rays of the sun broke through the misty peaks.
The horse stood motionless at the edge of the abyss, its breath heavy, as if it had just fulfilled a sacred mission. Then, it bowed its head—as if in reverence to the mountain.
From that day forward, the people named this place “Mã Pì Lèng”—meaning “Horse’s Nose Bridge”, in honor of the legendary moment when Giàng A Lềnh’s steed stood defiantly atop the pass, marking the beginning of a new era.
🏔️ From Legend to Reality – The Road of Happiness
As time passed, the tale of Giàng A Lềnh and his mythical journey continued to be passed down through generations.
But it wasn’t until the 20th century that this legendary path truly came to life, thanks to the relentless efforts of over 1,300 young volunteers and ethnic workers.
🔨 With nothing but their bare hands and primitive tools, they carved out the 185-kilometer-long “Road of Happiness,” connecting Hà Giang, Đồng Văn, and Mèo Vạc.
🛤️ And the most perilous section of this route became known as Mã Pì Lèng Pass, a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and perseverance.
